90210…All hype?

07Sep08

First off, I have to say that I am a huge fan of the original Beverly Hills 90210.  I still watch it every weekday on SoapNet at 5pm and 6pm (and no, I am not afraid to admit it).  That said, I was dissapointed to to hear that they were going to bring out a new 90210.  I truly believe that the original was given the perfect wrap up.

Then comes all the hype.  We were subjected to months of speculations about everything from the plot, to who we could expect to see from the original cast.  You couldn’t turn on an entertainment news show without hearing something about the new 90210.  Most of what they had to say was nothing more than rumors and speculations.  Finally, we were thrown a bone when it came out that Jennie Garth and Shannon Doherty would be returning (Doherty signed on for four episodes while Garth’s contract is open-ended).  Plus, they threw in Joe E. Tata (Nat) for good measures.

After months of teasing, 90210 finally premiered.  Finally, we would get to see what all the fuss has been about, and it couldn’t have been more dissapointing.  The opening was slow,  and the pace didn’t pick up much during the two hour time slot it was alloted.

As a fan of the original Beverly Hills 90210, I felt as though I was having a bit of deja vu.  I feel that if you are going to make a “sequel” to a show, then you should have something original to contribute.  The show felt as if the writers took alot of their material from the original and just put a spin on it by making the characters even more rich,  more spoiled, and more screwed up than the original gang that we all know and love.  I really hope that future episodes start to have more originality.

As for the original three cast members.  They were the best parts of the show.  The scenes that they were in, which weren’t many, were fantastic.  I hope that we get to see more of them and go deeper into who they have become.

I do not know how many of the old fans this new 90210 will bring in.  I’m sure that they are bound to get some, especially if they give the originals more story lines.  As for new fans from the younger generation, I guess we will just have to wait and see.  It seems to be  alot like some of the more popular shows today (i.e. Gossip Girl), so it can either go very well, or it can be too much like the others and bomb.  I guess we will just have to wait and see which direction it takes.

As for me, it’s like a train wreck…I don’t want to watch, but I know I will.

  1. Hi:

You know I had no idea there was a new Beverly Hills 90210. Shows how much attention I pay. I too liked the original series and enjoyed the storyline. I think I enjoyed the earlier series versus the latter series.

  2. I agree 100%. I loved the original Beverly Hills. So far, I have watched the first two episodes of 2.0. I guess they are ok. But I started watching the original in 1990 when I was about 11. I’m 28 now and feel kind of old watching these kids. But I’m like you, I know I’ll probably continue to watch!
